Over the past several years there has been a lot of buzz about engineered wood flooring. Guess what?... the buzz may be new, but engineered wood floors have been around for over a century! And what’s even more surprising is that some of those century-old engineered floors are still in service!
The age old design was a true-balanced 3-ply construction, bonded together with equestrian adhesive - that’s right… horse glue! As it turns out, today’s best engineered wood flooring products use the same approach, except that they now make use of modern adhesives, resulting in an even stronger assembly.
Unfortunately, many engineered flooring products on the market today use unbalanced and/or defective assemblies. There are a wide variety of these inferior engineered products available:
• some are 2-ply, with a veneer face mounted on plywood
• some are 3-ply, but not true-balanced (different species on top and bottom layers)
• still others are true-balanced 3-ply, but use unstable wood for the core, or adhesive that is poorly suited for the task.
To make matters worse, it is very difficult, if not impossible to assess the quality of many of the products that appear to be true-balanced. This is because there is no way to determine if the fabrication of many imported products took place under controlled conditions using suitable methods and materials.
All this may sound very grim, but please don’t feel disillusioned, because we can help. We are able to provide you with custom fabricated true-balanced 3-ply wood flooring to meet your project’s unique design requirements - with species, cut, width, lengths and face characteristics able to be specified. And because it is manufactured locally, even custom orders and additional material requests can be delivered rapidly. |
